Sturgis Rally

The motorcycles are coming! The motorcycles are coming! It was time to leave the Hills area.

Cyclists taking a break in the Badlands

I counted over 100 motorcycles (not the RVs and trucks towing & carrying cycles) in a twenty mile stretch along Interstate 90 yesterday. I was glad we were heading east and they were heading west. A few motorcyclists were heading east as they had completed their Black Hills tour. The Sturgis Rally is almost a three week event these days as some come at least one week prior to the rally, most come the week of the rally, and a few wait until the week after the rally. It is a major boost to the economy of all of SD, not just the Black Hills and Sturgis.

This one was my favorite. I was sitting outside reading one day last week when a flash of yellow went by on the street behind our parked RV. I grabbed the camera and head out in search of "Tweety Bird". When I caught up with it, Jan stepped out of the car/cycle and shared the story while Joe parked the RV.

The body of a 1959 Chevy was used to create this unusual bike. A friend helped Joe build it from scratch. Joe and Jan towed Tweety from Florida to South Dakota for the Rally.

She said they are doing the motorcycle rally tour this summer. They have been in the northeast and are headed to Idaho after the Sturgis Rally. They have been to the Sturgis Rally before. The last time Tweety was in SD for the Rally, an 80 year old/young woman got a ride in Tweety for her birthday. As we were leaving the camping resort Tweety was being gassed up, ready to head north.
