Georgia

We started our morning in Georgia hunting for its oldest geocache, GC1D. It has 1199 favorite points and was placed June 3, 2000. There are 12 geocaches placed in June 2000 still active in the world; 11 in the US & 1 in Canada. This was the main reason for our trip to Georgia.

Signal was along for the find

our path into the woods

and along a pond in a residential area

Then it was off to Augusta. Remember the Interstate photos from yesterday? Driving the Interstate in Georgia near Atlanta during rush hour?

We were moving right along when the brake lights came fast and furious! We traveled 5 miles in 45 minutes!

This was the reason why. True Value trailer caught fire. About five Highway Patrol cars, a fire truck and a wrecker forcing two lanes to one. We moved right along once we got past this scene, BUT about an hour behind our 'schedule.'

We focused on finding large cache containers today. We had four on our To Find List. This was one of them, in the woods next to a city cemetery.

This was another one. Well constructed and next to a business.

It was neat and well-organized. Certainly worthy of a favorite point. We struck out on the third one on our list. It was on private property (permission given) but we were uncomfortable parking in their driveway and walking into the trees at the edge of their property, even if it was a 'cool, large' cache container.

Then we headed across the border to South Carolina to find that state's oldest geocache.

Modoc Stash, GCF4 is a mile walk along a hiking, biking trail in Sumter National Forest. We protected all skin areas with DEET, grabbed our walking sticks and headed into the forest. No cell service. It started raining. The ground was slick and so were the rocks. We were not certain of the trail and the cache location. We came to our "senior" senses and came back out, soaking wet, disappointed, but safe. Maybe if it had not rained. Maybe if we had had just a wee bit of cell service (just in case!). Maybe if it had not been 80ยบ plus with all the humidity. And maybe had we done a bit more research... Not all caches are meant to be found! This was also the fourth large container on the list for the day. Oh well...

This is the Georgia counties geocaching map. Tomorrow we drive through South Carolina. Our destination is just across the border in North Carolina for a couple of days.
