Our LAST Geo-Adventure for the Summer/Fall

We took 2 1/2 days to get to the Black Hills last week. We probably could have completed our geocaching in a day and a half, but we wanted to have plenty of time to collect the must-haves on this trip. It was a beautiful drive along the hills and bluffs of the Missouri River and western SD. I did not realize the native grasses could be so many colors as they enter the fall season. I did the driving the first two days, so there are no photos, but on the third day, Hubby had the steering wheel and I had the camera.

we were along the eastern edge of the Badlands

animal skull on field entrance

we stopped at the site of the Wounded Knee Massacre

the hometown of two current rodeo champions
we have seen them perform

a little red school house in Fall County

served as a rural school, grades 1-8, for almost 100 years

built in 1892, it closed in the mid 1980s

it was also used as a dance hall, a church, and a general meeting place
its last use was as the rural Cascade fire department headquarters

we saw that movie!

then I saw THIS sign
our Favorite Daughter and I have wanted to visit
this place for many years
we HAD to stop and check it out

we didn't see 500 of them

but those we did see were pretty and healthy

OFD would LOVE this place

a beautiful setting along Cheyenne Creek

I'm a sucker for old farm/ranch buildings

  1. Great blog Coleen. You and I would make a good team photographing ol' barns, homesteads!!! Really like the school house and its history. Love the horses!! Good job.
