Gene & Kay of Canby MN joined us on Thursday for a geocaching road trip. Our goals were to geocache on the way to Globe, join some friends for more geocaching and attend a geocaching event in Globe hosted by friends. It was a full, hot day.
We followed the gold line from the left side of the map to the right side. We stopped in Superior for breakfast and continued east into the mountains. The first community we passed through was Top of the World. One does not want to blink on this section of the drive. There is a geocache in the area with a story. It is worthy of sharing.
“Top O’ The World” is also referred to, and supposedly is actually named “Sutton’s Summit”, after the man who founded the area. As such, what is the story of “Top O’ The World”? How did the area become known as, or dubbed “Top O’ The World”? Mr. Sutton founded this small community in the Mid-Eastern portion of the State of Arizona before prostitution was made to be illegal, and had a brothel in the community. Where the “Top O’ The World” Trading Post is now located, along the North side of State Highway 60, Mr. Sutton placed a large billboard, advertising his brothel. Wanting to have a bit of a “catchy” phrase for his advertising, his billboard reflected the message: COME VISIT OUR LADIES, AND LET THEM PUT YOU ON TOP OF THE WORLD! Thus, the little community was dubbed “Top O’ The World”, and became more well-known as such, than the actual name of “Sutton’s Summit”.
We bypassed the geocache which was the location of the original billboard, supposedly. We did find some others before reaching the next mining community.
looking for the cache |
taking photos while they searched |
still looking for the cache I offered some advice & Hubby made the find |
Hubby, Gene & Kay searching while I took photos again, no luck, so I joined them and made the find |
Do you see it???? It is there!
The next community is Miami. We spent some time in this mining town looking for geocaches. On every other trip, we have not left Highway 60 when we passed through. We had the opportunity to see what lies beyond the state highway.
1700+ people live in this community
the shrine was the reason for the cache
Kay and I took photos while the guys cached
they found it on their own
wild Mexican poppies
I love it when I get the right camera settings!
former school
now a cultural, mining & ranching museum of the Miami area
the striking colors just screamed "take a photo"
hopefully the eye notices the colors and NOT
the background noise
antique store along Main Street Miami
these balconies reminded me of Top of the World
maybe a hotel in its former life?
mural on the side of a Main Street building
some very cool architecture
poppies on the mine tailings
smelter for Freeport-McMorRan mining
After getting all the caches in Miami (there are 7) we continued east to Claypool. Again, I have seen the sign, but have not veered from Highway 60 to check out Claypool, population 1500+. 1500? Who would have guessed, other than the folks who live there!
Main Street Claypool
it does have a Walmart a little farther down the highway
location of 1 of the 2 Claypool geocaches
love the truck title
The guys enjoyed an interesting conversation with one of the friendly fire personnel. We choose to grab a refreshment before joining two more CV geocachers and the two hosts of the geo-event for some "worth their salt" geocaches in Globe. How we spent our afternoon in the next post!
