Amarillo

Our stay in Amarillo was to be a two nighter before moving to Lubbock for some serious geocaching. That was the original plan. Things have a way of happening to change those best laid plans.

In our case, the travel trailer developed a MAJOR plumbing issue we discovered when we arrived at the campground and were hooking up to their water, electric and sewer. After sleeping one night in the trailer, knowing we had to use the one campground comfort station (with two toilets & two showers & many guests who used those facilities) AND realizing there would be NO (comfortable or easy) WAY to wash dishes, brush teeth, cook, shower, as well as using our own bathroom toilet...well, lets just say, we needed to revise our Plan A. After very little sleep Hubby presented a plan on Saturday morning. After a cup of coffee and some time to process I compromised and Plan B was conceived: Keep the travel trailer at the campground plugged into the electric to preserve the food I had prepared and bought for this 15 day trip AND we move to a hotel for 3 nights. Then head north. (We don't know if the plumbing issue was in Albuquerque because we did not hook up the sewer, just electric and water for the one night.)

Hubby has put so much time and planning into this trip home, it wasn't fair to scrap his many hours of work any more than it was fair to toss all the food I had prepared if there was another option. Three nights in a hotel allows us to do SOME of the TX geocaching. Two days on the road using the propane to keep the refrigerator cool if it isn't opened several times a day will keep the food. (The fridge won't be cold, but cool will work.) We'll do hotels at night.

We have heard stories of RV issues and the time spent at repair shops and most of those stories are not good ones. The issues are eventually fixed, but not necessarily in the time frame we have. We know it will be fixed right by a guy back home. We'd rather have him work on it when we don't need the travel trailer than expect someone to fix it in 3 days on short notice. (This was Saturday before Easter.)

We had a few geocaches on the Must Do list in Amarillo and did them the first afternoon.

Amarillo is really promoting Route 66

these 3 were also across the street

(there is a third one)

We have stopped in Amarillo a number of times throughout our years of traveling to and from AZ. Each time we find a few more geocaches worthy of the time and effort of fighting traffic and the busy downtown business areas. Thus ends the geocaching in Amarillo on this trip.

  1. Ugh, so sorry to hear about your trailer problems but so glad that sometimes when life throws you lemons, you can make lemonade! Sounds like the extra time allowed for some fun geocaching! Can't wait to hear how the rest of the trip goes, hopefully in a very positive way. Safe travel kids, enjoy the journey. Hugs
