ND Road Trip, Day 1

We are on a road trip, geocaching in North Dakota counties on our way to the Saturday event Gilby Gone Wild III in, you guessed it, Gilby ND. This road trip is stopping in little towns and out-of-the-way places because that is where we need a geocache. And is very typical, we found some interesting things along the way.

Goodrich, population 106 or 69 depending on the source

there were no paved roads in the town

the geocache was nearby

we tried to find a school building but did not see one

Veeder Cemetery 1885-1985

the cemetery is behind the school house

Ingersoll School was built in 1885 on land donated by a homesteader in the area. Yoked oxen hauled the materials from Bismarck, a distance of about 55 miles. Olaf Anderson constructed the building for $719. It was the first of five one-room schools built in the Veeder School District #10. The first teacher, hired in 1885 was paid $30 a month.

The school was not just a school but also served as a church for many different denominations of the area homesteaders. It was also the community center for social occasions including weddings and funerals, community meetings, elections and basket socials.

I do not have the date when the school closed. Recently it was the setting for a wedding. McLean County Historical Society

If your community is not along the interstate, how do you let travelers know what you have to offer?
