Geocaching in Cancun

There are not too many geocaches in the Cancun area; a total of seven in fact. Luckily, there were a few in the hotel district including an Adventure Lab. We convinced OFD and Miss W to join us one morning for the adventure of riding the red bus line to geocache with the enticement of shopping after lunch.

The cost to ride the red bus was 70 pesos per person or about $1.00. No problem. Then we learned it was $1.00 each time you got off the bus and wanted to get back on to move to the next location. Since we did not have pesos, we just paid the dollar. I got change the first time and after that the driver just kept the profit. That was fine by me as I had no intention of walking 3 miles in the heat and humidity. Besides, riding the red bus was an adventure!

We had bought a geocaching membership for the grands this summer when Miss W expressed a real interest in geocaching. They enjoy doing Adventure Lab caches and often have a real knack (geo-sense) of where the container might be hidden. Of course, offering shopping as a reward helped convince her to spend part of the morning with us.

We were looking for Mayan sculptures that morning. Miss W was a valuable asset as she knew the exact Spanish word we needed to complete the task. Her aunt downloaded the geocaching apps on her phone allowing Miss W to log into the grands account and get credit while Hubby and I used our phones.

One of our stops was at a sculpture park.

My favorite is this one; painted and stacked plastic chairs. Not all of the displays had titles and if they did, I could not read them anyway!

Since we did not want to ride the bus all the way to Cancun proper, we got off at a supermarket to grab something to drink and catch the bus heading in the direction back toward the resort.

I would say this supermarket compares to our Walmarts. It sold groceries, clothes, personal hygiene products, liquor, souvenirs, and had a pharmacy and a second floor we did not explore. It was a busy place. That is where we also learned there was no red bus pass as I had thought. It was one ticket per ride and per rider. Miss W asked the question of the store's security staff and gave us the answer.

We had an entertainer on the third bus ride ($12.00 so far). We learned the bus did NOT stop at all the bus stops. We learned we could get the driver to stop anywhere if we pressed the red button. We learned we could tell the driver where we wanted to stop and he would. We felt safe and I for one was very happy to pay the $12.00 for the four of us to get around. Some of the buses were very crowded and others had lots of open seats. Sometimes someone would overhear our conversations and offer a suggestion to help us. It was a great learning experience for all of us.

our lunch stop as it was close to shopping

The Diá de los Muertos altar at the Hard Rock. I recognized Elvis and Michael Jackson. I think the woman on the top level in the middle is Selena Quintanilla Pérez. OFD did not recognize the other two and Miss W is too young to know them.

After lunch Miss W and OFD shopped in the area and walked the 15 minutes back to the resort. Hubby and I chose to ride and end our geocaching for the day.

We continued the geocaching on Friday morning, minus a grandkid. OFD did not join us either as she isn't nearly as excited about geocaching as we are. I will say she did use the geo app on her phone while we were in Tulum to alert us to the exact location one of the two caches in the Mayan city. She tolerates our hobby and will assist on rare occasions.

We rode the red bus to the southern part of the hotel district for the second part of the Adventure Lab. This location is another Mayan city ruins. We did not pay the admission to explore.

we did not explore this either
I think McBe will enjoy it in a few years

morning glory?

We completed the 5 stops and got our virtual souvenir for our red bus adventure. We found a traditional geocache to get credit for finding geocaches in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. We also got credit for 2 geocaches in Tulum, also in the state of Quintana Roo.

The two green shaded areas show our Mexican geocache finds in the states of  Baja California and Quintana Roo.
