Geocaching in Downtown Rapid

Friday was an errand day. We needed a few things for the camper. We heard about a store in Rapid that carried some geocaching supplies and wanted to check it out. We had a few caches on our 'would like to do' list. AND we wanted to practice a cache called a webcam.

There is only one webcam geocache in South Dakota. It is located on the School of Mines campus. We spent a couple of hours on Thursday trying to figure out how to use a Mac to take a photo, as the cache is really set up for a PC. We thought we had it, but needed to test our theory.

The coordinates take the cacher to a point on campus where a moving camcorder records the intersection action. The most 'difficult' part for us was finding a business with free WiFi so one of us could sit at the computer and 'click' the camera to record the other at GZ. I sat at an outdoor table at a downtown restaurant while Hubby went back to campus. A couple of phone calls later...BINGO. Got cha!

We heard from a MN geocacher at an event on Thursday evening that it can be done with an iPhone. That will be my next goal.

We met cachers from MN, AZ, Alberta Canada and from the Black Hills region at the Silver Saloon in Hill City last night.  Thanks Sherry for sharing your photos.

We had several caches in mind when we went to town. Two of them involved the presidential statues on the corners in downtown Rapid. We have not really explored the downtown area since it has been revitalized. Lots of little boutiques and speciality shops.

I had heard of and read about the mural wall on an alley building several years ago, but had not seen it. While chasing down the presidents, we passed the brightly colored alley. I stepped inside for some photos of the awesome, interesting art work. One painted building wall has grown to several.
