Devil's Tower

Devil's Tower was one of our destinations on our geo-road trip. The last time we had visited this National Monument was sometime in the early to mid 1980s. Devil's Tower was the first National Monument and like the National Park service, it is celebrating its 100th birthday.

a unique structure rising from the rolling hills

passed through Huelett before reaching the tower

town appears to have a thing for deer antlers

located along the Belle Fourche River

saw a deer on the way

the rubble at the base was once part of the mountain

June is a sacred month for the native peoples
no climbing on Devil's Tower is allowed in June

looks like it just rises out of the earth

rain was in the forecast for the day
we had just finished the 1.5 mile walk around the base
when the drops began to fall
a little later some small hail joined the rain drops
temps dropped about 20 degrees once the front passed

On to Sundance...
