Alstadt - Old City Salzburg, Austria

Our day trip to Salzburg Austria was just a 2 hour train ride from Munich.

comfy train ride

green pastures & fields with Alps in the background

Salzburg means "Salt Castle." The Salzach River divides the city in two, the Alstadt (Old City) and the Neustadt (New City). The river carried salt barges in the early years. We spent our day in the old city, and specifically in...

Mozart Plaza

Mozart 1756-1791

Mozart's birthplace

The composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born and raised in Salzburg, was employed as musician at the archbishopal court from 1773 to 1781. His house of birth and residence are tourist attractions. His family is buried in a small church graveyard in the old town, and there are many monuments to "Wolferl" in the city.

music & dance entertainment at Mozart's museum
and MANY tours stopped to look at the house, hear the
tour guides' talk and take photos

I sat on a bench across from Mozart's birthplace and watched people while OFD shopped and Hubby went looking for a geocache. It was a very busy area because it was the oldest street in Salzburg. It had a great variety of shopping experiences (souvenir shops to wine tasting to clothing). Every tour group stopped in the intersection (more like a T) to look at the house, and listen to the music. It was a great place to watch people.
