Rothenburg ob der Tauber

OFD and I did a train trip to Rothenburg. She thought I would like the city because of its medieval history. She was so right. The buildings in the historic part of the city were mostly in place by the 1400s. Many of the ones I saw had dates in the 1200s. The town was built around the castle in 1142 and two of the original gates from that time period are still in place. The second town wall was built later and that wall is intact. Cars and pedestrians enter the historic town through one of several gates/arches.

one of several gates to historic town center

town wall

another pedestrian entrance

flower boxes on many of the windows

outdoor seating reaches into the street

St. Jakobs

Garden of Gethsemane
carved by an unknown artist

loved the color of the buildings
narrow streets, no sidewalks

the Christmas store

many nutcrackers around the shopping district

replicas of the truck are for sale in the store

huge Christmas tree decorated year round
maybe two stories high or three

and the German traditional "Weishnachtpryramide"

Councilor's Tavern
along town square

clocks telling the month, day, and time

Rothenburg famous for its Schneeballen pastries
'over-rated, dry' according to Rick Steves
pie dough pastry the size of a snow ball
we did try them & we agree with Rick

town wall tower
more flower boxes on the windows

this is my vision of rural Germany
lace curtains and window boxes

St. George's Fountain and
today an art gallery, at one time a grain storage building

so dang quaint!

soup, coffee and a Radler (beer & lemonade)

dinner choice: potato cakes with a salad

rhubarb water, interesting

pigs going to market
saw this truck as we headed bak to the train station

saw this on the way to Rothenburg
grass growing on a tiled roof
insulation?

fall view at the train station
a successful day of some eating, drinking, walking, shopping
and feeling like I was back in the 1400s
Loved it!

  1. I loved seeing and hearing about your trip here. It brought back great memories of the trip I made several years ago meeting Jon in Germany while he was stationed in Bosnia. We followed Rick Steve's book and rode the trains all over Germany, Austria and Switzerland before I had to return home and he had to return to Bosnia.
Rothenburg is one of my favorite places! Enjoy the rest of your trip and keep those photos and experiences coming! Hugs
