Dinner at the Ratskeller

In doing her researcher for Hubby's Bucket List trip, OFD checked out eating places for traditional German food. The Ratskeller was at the top of her list.

After about 24 hours since our last sleep and about 16 hours of sitting on our butts in various states and counties, we were about as fried as we could possibly be. Our goal once getting on the train and off at our stop, finding our hotel and checking in was to explore the Marienplatz, find the Glockenspiel and get some dinner. Mission accomplished.

The New Town Hall was built in the 1890s after the city of Munich had outgrown the Old Town Hall. The city government center has over 400 rooms, is home to the mayor and city council, and tourist information center.  It sustained minor damage in WW II. Besides the famous restaurant, the New Town Hall is also the celebratory location for honoring successful athletes and teams. And the location of the Glockenspiel...but more on that later.

The Ratskeller is a restaurant located in the basement of the New Town Hall. It resides in the six cross-vaulted rooms of the basement of the 'original' New Town Hall. It opened August 1, 1874.

I wish I had taken more photos from the dining room as now I understand their meaning. The ceiling paintings depicts the 'battle' between beer and wine. They were quite humorous and numerous.

Dinner was just the right size and delicious.

and Carrots served with a side of Spaetzle Pasta
(my dinner choice)

Wirtshaus Bratwurst (Hubby's choice)

Sauerbraten (OFD's dinner selection)

Yes, sleep may be over-rated, but we are finding at our age, getting at least some (none of us slept on the plane) is really important. We were back to the hotel by 6 PM and in bed by 8:30 the first night. Of course, we were all awake way too early the next morning, but that is okay. We are ready for another adventure in Munich!
