English Cuisine

One of the reasons OFD invited us along on the European Adventure was to have other adults along for dining experiences. I know back in 2005 on our 'first' trip, she had places in mind where she wanted to eat. She checks menu options and prints the places she wants to visit. She's done that for at least a dozen years. That is a long time to wait to taste something that sounds really interesting. The real advantage of her years of research, she knows the ingredients and food specialties native to each of the countries we traveled. Our plan was to have dinner and drinks each evening or at least once in each country.

Slug & Lettuce was one of her London long-awaited preferences. There wasn't one near where we were staying, but I did see one while on the bus tour. So after our time at the Tower of London, I wanted to oblige her long-time request. We scouted out one of their several locations, found a nearby Tube route, and enjoyed an early dinner at Slug & Lettuce.

We started with a drink: I had a WooWoo (red vodka, peach schnapps, fresh lime juice & cranberry juice) and she had an English Country Garden (gin, elderflower liqueur, fresh cucumber, mint, lime, & apple juice). YUM! Hubby had a coke.

The drinks were outstanding. The food delicious. The name of the establishment name was interesting and much better than it sounded. The other days' meals were not eventful enough to take a photo. The 3 of us had dinner the first night at the little Italian restaurant where I ate with the kids in 2005. Another night we ate at an Asian cafe in our neighborhood. However, we did try something different on our day trip...

DELISH!
at the Stonehenge cafe

Our day trip afternoon was spent in Bath. We had a 2.5 hour trip back to London at the end of the day, so we grabbed a sandwich at a itty, bitty establishment where the tables and chairs are so close your body parts are very intimate with your neighbors as you get into and out of your chairs. But, the building was old and original with creaky floors, small & narrow stairs, and original woodwork. We wanted something light and we were in a hurry. Again, I tried something new, new to me.

Croque-monsieur
grilled ham & cheese YUM!
European grilled cheese sandwiches have the cheese
melted on the top, outside the bread. There is also a
slice of cheese inside with the ham. I had one in Belgium
but this one was the best, as it was grilled just right.
OFD had one without the ham.
FYI a Croque-madam has a fried egg on the top

I had planned to put all the food into one post, but after seeing my photos and doing the research, I am going to separate them. I have more European Adventure posts to do anyway. Here at home the sky is overcast. There is 6-8 inches of snow on the ground and the temp is 11ยบ. I will enjoy reliving the memories of warmer places through the posts...
