The sign says it all.
This cemetery had been vandalized to such an extent
after our 2006 visit, a barb-wire fence has been erected
to help safe-guard the remaining graves.
The cemetery is on a bluff west of Superior,
facing Picket Post Mountain
Some graves have markers, but no names
Some are in need of some upkeep
One was well marked, but unreadable
Another is well marked and readable
Probably family cares for this site
(I remember seeing only one other grave on our last visit.
I bet it was this one. It was enclosed with a fence.)
Some graves are barely marked
This one was so interesting
The money and candy just lying next to the name plate
Definitely old and probably original
These two graves were outside the fenced area
Hubby finally spotted it, a small plaque on the ground
The purpose for our stop, Mattie Earp
We have had a Wyatt Earp relative speak at the resort,
sharing his life as Wyatt Earp. So I have had an interest
in his common-law wife, Mattie.
We had trouble finding Mattie's grave this time. I knew
about the vandals at the cemetery, but I was still
expecting Mattie's grave to look somewhat similar to
what we saw in 2006.
I was expecting something rather visible
Maybe decorated
I am glad I know what it used to look like.
Three very different historic cemeteries
